Where are we running ?

Food for thought for this post has been provided by the following two posts: Susu, Rohan

Lets imagine a world where everyone is equally rich and equally popular. In short, there is no value for money or fame. Now think of what you would be doing with your life in such a world. You still have to earn your living in this new world, but let's say all professions pay the same - the janitor is just as rich as the artist or the actor. Now lets jump back to reality and compare your present state with the state you fancied 2 lines ago. If these are the same, then I must say, you are one of the blessed ones and you need not read any further. But my guess is that often times than not, these states are never the same. Why ?

In most occupations, we always end up doing what others want, and probably never what we want. Your professor might claim that he is doing independent research in a field of his liking, but in reality he would be working on an area where he sees there is potential for funding. An artist might claim that his art embodies only his thoughts, when actually he is painting to the liking of his customers without which he can't sustain himself. I am a great fan of Metallica, and often times considered Hard rock artists as an example of profession where you do something you are really passionate about - strum the guitar to your own tunes, beat down the drums and scream your lungs out. Nope ! Even that's commercial. Every show on their tour features the same song sequence, the same theatrics on stage - nothing is spontaneous !! Sports might seem probably better than most occupations. But even here, you follow a strict regiment to outwit your competitors. You dont do what you like, you do what your coaches tell, who in turn do what their managers tell them etc. I am not even mentioning regular service in this category, cause most of the time you are either listening to your superior or to your customer. And the list goes on........

Personally, I know less than a handful of people who seem to be doing what they like and dont care if others give a damn about their work. But then again, they are secure financially and possess the leeway to fulfill their fancies. Barring exception, every action and decision of our's finally boils down to either money or the opinion of others.

Life always seem like a run. Every one is trying to run faster and farther than his neighbour. There might be a finish line in sight. Some cross this line, some don't. I often wonder, Where and What would people run for if they were not competing with each other ?.

There is a purpose to Life...
look for it around you...

Try knowing him and try harder every day

well.. probably Arouse Inc. will put and end to such a misery.. that's what I am running for atleast in my life... if not in this country, at India it shall begin !!.. but rite now I wanna just run away back to my country, where diwali looks more like diwali and not just a small social gathering in a small community room.... ANYWAYS HAPPY DIWALI....

Nice one. It probably explains why the universe is expanding as well.Galaxies are running away from each other for some reason in a quest to reach some point :p

Your decision to do your own work is a very good aspiration.I thinnk hobbies form a good way of doing things which you like.that is why they are hobbies and not reg job. And, since you have to have your feet on this world, you need money and if your hobby is strong enough to generate money, you are all good to go.

In your case, putting PJs is your hobby.Lets say you become a stand-up comedian but then you have to make jokes that your audience like.It is a circle! are you watching india-srilanka matches?

@Raja

Great to hear from u man. How r things going in SC ?

As u put it, it does seem like a vicious circle...but after some time I think we should have a good idea of what we like and what we need to do...

@KP
I spent more time guessing who the commentor was than the meaning of the comment...thanks for ur pithy verse..

@Casa...

That seems like a good answer....

@Susu

Even when we discussing Arous Inc, it was filled with delusions of Beverly Hills and Banjara Hills (the money factor) was written all over it dude...we shld however get our acts together soon..

@Totti

Good point abt Hobbies, but as u put it they dont earn u a living...Deprived of a PJ knowledgible audience, my talent is dwindling...

I really liked this post of urs (perhaps the fact that I read it while Dhoni had just hit his record 8th six in the 3rd ODI had something to do with it too :) )
Also 2 points to ponder over (this might raise more questions that answers)
Runs end running doesnt
If u eventually end up winning the rat race u still are a leader of rats

@Casa...yup, I checked that one...grt job

@Rohan...I read abt the first one on ur blog (a reply to my comment)...the second one is nice too..but if the world is full of rats, wouldn't u like to be the leader of rats..or do u wanna play cat ?

Ganguly's absence & Little Master's return is doing wonders to Indian cricket...

Hey Pointy,

Nice post.

Well, everybody with a thinking brain one day reaches a point where he sees the meaninglessness of , what we call, life! This is the truth which is very difficult to accept, because by default, we all are simple animals.. and animals need no reason to live ..they simply live ..

I don't know if there are any answers, but only think that can be said, may be , since we claim ourselves to be superior beings, so we should try to do something beyond just living .. different people have different ways of doing that ... important point is to start looking for one ...

Sorry for blabbering too much .. just had a burst , may be ...
