Wealth on the Road

A week ago I was cruising on the Santa Monica Fwy, when I got passed by a new Rolls Royce Phantom. I have seen plenty of the old majestic Phantoms, but you don't see a new one very often. 5 minutes later I took the Overland ave exit, when I saw a Bentley Continental GT on the other side of the road. 5 minutes later I reached westwood Village, and as I was walking away from my parked car, I heard an exhaust roar. I turned back to look and I saw a grey Ferrari F430. Within 15 minutes of a routine drive through some very ordinary neighbourhoods, my eyes were feasted to 3 great cars with a total value of more than $1 mn !!

This left me thinking, what is the most visible indicator of wealth ?
Palatial Houses ? Yes, but houses dont move, so unless you are in a particular neighbourhood you would never see it.
Upscale restaurants ? Again, you don't see them unless you go looking for them.
Designer clothes ? ....and you will never see them unless you peek into the wardrobe of the rich and filthy.
After thinking over numerous such examples, I finally came to the conclusion that cars are probably the most visible indicators of wealth.

You have to be a little car literate to discern between a 7 series ($100,000+) and 3 series ($30,000) BMW or a SL65 ($100,000+) and a C230 ($30,000) Mercedes, but it doesn't take any talent to differentiate between a Porsche and a Toyota.

Although I have always been a big fan of cars, my eyes were never treated to this kind of riches before moving to Los Angeles. My intuition was that these cars would only line the fancy boulevards in Beverly Hills and Bel-Air. But I was surprised to see more than 10 porsches in my first half hour in Pasadena. For someone who loves cars and knows the exact value of each of them, driving in the city can be very overwhelming. I have even travelled through not so great neighbourhoods in south LA, and yet managed to see Boxsters parked on road.

For a lot of people, cars just constitute a means to get from point A to point B. Some like to pack more horses under their hood and prefer V8's and more. But when I look around, in most case I find a superficial display of wealth. And it's this superficial display which at times makes you realise how insignificant you and your car are on the road .

Finally, if you thought Ferrari Enzo, Lamborghini Murcielago, Aston Martin DB9, Benteleys are movie stuff, then just take a walk down the Rodeo Drive where even SL class Merc's and 7 series BMW go unnoticed.

Totally agree with you on cars being the most visible indicators of wealth. Just recently I saw the 2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur on the road and was surprised that someone had already acquired it. People are definitely getting richer coz even in my area which is no where close to Rodeo Drive or Beverly Hills, I quite often see the GT and F430. Pretty soon Benz's, Bmw's and Porsche's would be every tom, dick and harry's vehicle :)

Yes, but you are walking on Rodeo Drive, you probably are a millionaire already ;)

huh.. had to come out some day... pointy.. try to grow out of the feeling of an inferior existence on this planet, may be someday you shall be driving one of those cars... prolly as a desi chauffer... so till then stop whining about it!!!! Simpler solution.. move to jog falls from LA.. drive a YAM.... you will surely feel better...

Totally agree with susu. This materialistic whining is a recurring phenomenon in your posts. They are just things man. Somebody will always have a bigger house and a faster car. Get over it and be happy with what you've got. Even I appreciate cars, but only as amazing works of engineering and design , on the other hand the jerks who own them just use their cars to yell "Look at me, I'm rich!". Besides on Delhi's roads, my 50hp Maruti will beat any Ferrari, Lambo or Maserati :)) .....had lots more to say but I'll stop at that. :)

i was at a talk recently .. and this guy made an interesting observation .. a palatial house is the most obvious status symbol.. but when real estate prices are beyond the reach the next obvious status symbol is a fancy car.
makes perfect sense in LA then ..expensive houses are outside the reach of most people.. so they decide ti splurge on fancy cars as status symbols

@Reader...U already saw the 2006 Spur !!...I think Benz C, E series, BMW 3 & 5, Lexus, Porsche Boxsters are already as common as Infiniti's and Acura's..so u live in LA ?

@Casa...Yeah ur rght...Rodeo Dr is like a mecca for these exotic cars..

@Susu...The soln is not Jog falls man...it is Arous Inc..and YAM kicks ass anyday...(although I have driven only Honda & Enfield)

@Anarkist...I agree with you dude. But I have travelled so much in this country, seen so many big cities, but never have I seen such display of riches. It is kinda mindboggling...and I am not talking abt Ferraris, Lamobo's etc..there are always these filthy rich. But the average mass seems to possess such nice BMWs, Mercs, Lexus, Porsche etc...u have to c it to believe it..I think everyone in this town has robbed a bank :)

@Nice_try....Infact most of the fancy cars that ppl possess r due to the returns on their investment in real estate....the real estate boom in last 6 yrs has got them loadsa cash...

My point seems to have been lost on you, but whatever. Loans, 10 credit cards, double mortgages, leases, financing etc and even I can buy a Porsche. I just think its a vulgar display of wealth. But then, I'm embarassed to listen to my ipod in public, so thats just an opinion.

@Anarkist...
My post was not about my lack of these things, but rather the abundace of them in LA. Even SFO and silicon valley which is full of self made millionaires pales in this car show display....and I dont think cities like NY, Chicago, Houston, Philly come even close...

...and I wonder why is there such a big disparity...Is it just lifestyle or R ppl really more affluent or is it both ?

I agree with u that its a vulgar display of wealth...I agree that there might be 10 credit cards, loans and double mortgage behind most of them....but that is true everywhere in this country....it is a country of borrowing economy ...probably a lil more in SoCal !!

Know what? Your county has the largest number of millionares (262,800). So its probably not just 'wealth on the road' but off it too.

The Enzo guys wife was driving the SLR without a license and without registration...she had European plates !! what a loser

M not much much of a car freak myself, in fact I think I wouldnt even know the specs on my car for that matter. Can we plzzz get the lowdown on wat totti's hallucinating abt?

@Rohan..

If u don't care much for car specs then u wont find a big change....but for a car lover like me, it is both exciting and frustrating at the same time...

Totti, is on one of his nested loop dreams

@Reader...

My favourite Merc is the CLS 4 door "coupe". It's stlying is very different from contemporary cars....and whats more....add a V8 AMG to it...and it's a beast..
